Tatton Park's Canaletto exhibition traces a Cheshire journey to Venice

Visitors to Tatton Park this year have had the chance to see one of the most ambitious exhibitions the Knutsford estate has staged. Beyond the View: Canaletto, which opened in March and runs until November 2026, celebrates world-class art in Cheshire and the remarkable link between the Egerton family home and eighteenth-century Venice.
The exhibition tells the story of Samuel Egerton and his journey from Cheshire to Venice, and of his connection to Canaletto, the painter whose luminous views of the city's canals, palaces and festivals made him one of the most sought-after artists of his age.
It is a tale that brings the Grand Tour era vividly to life. Young men from landed families travelled across Europe to complete their education, and many returned with paintings, sculpture and books that still fill the great houses of England today. Tatton's exhibition invites visitors to see the mansion's collection through that lens.
The show was highlighted by Visit Cheshire as one of the county's new must-dos for 2026, alongside other cultural landmarks, and it gives the historic mansion a fresh reason to draw art lovers from across the North West.
As ever at Tatton, the exhibition is only part of the experience. The estate's deer park, formal gardens and farm make it easy to turn a gallery visit into a full day out, and autumn, with the parkland turning gold and the deer at their most active, is arguably the most beautiful time to go. There is something fitting about stepping out of a room full of Venetian views into a quintessentially English landscape.
With the exhibition entering its final weeks, now is the moment for anyone who has not yet seen it to plan a visit. It is a rare opportunity to encounter Venetian masterpieces and the Cheshire story behind them in the house where that story unfolded.
It is also a reminder that Cheshire's historic houses are far more than handsome backdrops. Behind their facades lie stories of travel, patronage and taste that connect a corner of the county to the wider currents of European art.
