Rising out of the flat fields between Holmes Chapel and Macclesfield, the great white dish of the Lovell Telescope is one of the most recognisable sights in Cheshire. Jodrell Bank, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, has been looking to the skies for decades, and its visitor centre has become one of the county's most rewarding days out for curious minds of all ages.

The site attracts around 100,000 visitors a year, drawn by a blend of science, heritage and sheer spectacle. At its heart is First Light, the striking pavilion that tells the story of the observatory and the people who built it, set alongside landscaped gardens and walks with uninterrupted views of the telescope.

This year the centre has offered a full programme for visitors. Dome shows have run through the year, and the summer exhibition Curious Universe: Cosmic Titans explored quantum science from May to September, encouraging visitors to grapple with some of the biggest ideas in physics.

Visiting has become simpler too. Since 20 January 2026, Jodrell Bank has used a new online ticketing website. Annual Ticket holders who bought before that date are asked to create an account so they can access their ticket and book free return visits online, a handy perk for families who like to come back through the seasons.

The visitor centre, known as the Jodrell Bank Centre for Engagement, is supported separately from the scientific research at the observatory and, as the Museums Association reported this summer, remains open to visitors.

As the nights lengthen, autumn and winter are a natural time to visit. There is something quietly thrilling about standing beneath the telescope on a crisp afternoon, then heading inside to learn how the universe beyond it works.

It is also a place with real appeal for younger visitors. Science that might feel abstract in a classroom becomes tangible when you can see a working radio telescope on the scale of the Lovell, and a day here can spark a lifelong fascination with space.

Jodrell Bank is off the A535 near Holmes Chapel. Tickets, opening times and the latest what's on information are at jodrellbank.net.
