For one weekend at the end of summer, Congleton becomes a town-sized music venue. The Congleton Jazz and Blues Festival returned on 29 and 30 August 2026 with more than 80 gigs across 22 venues, and every one of them was free to attend.

The festival is organised by Congleton Live CIC, a volunteer-led community interest company, which has built the event into one of the most popular dates in the East Cheshire calendar. Its simple but effective format sees gigs spread across bars, cafes, clubs, hotels and outdoor spaces, all within easy walking distance of one another in the town centre.

That compact layout is a big part of the charm. Visitors can wander from one venue to the next, catching a blues band in a pub, a jazz set in a cafe and an afternoon performance outdoors, building their own programme as they go. Congleton Town Hall serves as a focal point, while venues such as the Cygnet Club join in the celebrations.

Families are well catered for, too. The Physic Garden has hosted an outdoor family space, making the festival as appealing to young children as to seasoned music fans, and helping to create a relaxed, community atmosphere across the weekend.

Free festivals of this kind depend on the commitment of volunteers, venues and sponsors, and the scale of the 2026 programme is a testament to the effort that goes on behind the scenes. For local businesses, the influx of visitors over the weekend is a welcome boost, while for musicians it is a valuable opportunity to play to new audiences.

Congleton has long had a lively cultural life for a town of its size, and the jazz and blues weekend has become a fixture that residents look forward to each year. With plenty of shows to choose from and no tickets to buy, it is also one of the most accessible ways to enjoy live music in Cheshire.

Keep an eye out for news of next year's programme, which will be announced by the organisers in due course, and for volunteering opportunities for anyone who would like to help make it happen.
