Some country estates are content simply to look beautiful. Arley Hall & Gardens, in the quiet lanes near Great Budworth and Northwich, has spent 2026 proving it can be one of Cheshire's liveliest cultural venues as well.

The estate is best known for its gardens, and its Garden Festival remains a highlight of the county's horticultural calendar. For 2026 the festival added a new Show Gardens section, building on the success of the previous year, with two gardens designed and built by Wrenbury-based Canalside Garden Centre and by Synergyscape, which won a silver medal in the Creative Corner category in 2025. Walk-through Feature Gardens were introduced too.

The judging line-up underlined the festival's ambition. Creative Corner designs were assessed by Paul Cook, curator at RHS Harlow Carr, and Callum Corrie, RHS Young Garden Designer 2024, while the Show Gardens were judged by Alan Mason and Joe Whitehead of the Professional Gardeners' Guild. Lymm Concert Band was among the performers entertaining visitors.

Music fans were catered for in May, when the Live at Arley outdoor concerts brought Gareth Gates, Imagination, and The Bay City Rollers with Mud to the estate over three evenings, following the Food Festival weekend of 9 and 10 May with its demonstrations, show stage and live music.

Theatre has found a natural home here too. Children's open-air theatre presented The Jungle Book in June, and in August The Lord Chamberlain's Men performed Othello in the Walled Garden, a setting that suits Shakespeare as well as any stage. Picnic rugs, a summer evening and the old brick walls of a historic garden make for the kind of theatre night that lingers long in the memory.

It is all part of a carefully curated calendar that gives visitors fresh reasons to return through the seasons, and the estate's events pages already look ahead to Christmas, traditionally one of the most atmospheric times to visit a historic house.

For anyone who has not been, Arley rewards an unhurried afternoon: the gardens, the hall and the surrounding countryside feel a world away from the bustle, yet are only a short drive from Northwich and Knutsford.
